Woah! Today has been wonderful! :D
Firstly, today is my grandma's birthday! Happy Birthday :D She waited for 12am to cut her cake, but she cut it earlier and I sang for her happy birthday song!
Next, I attended a series of lectures, from Science Focus, with Felecia, Punita, Clara and Clarence (hopefully, I spent their names correctly). The lectures are super interesting and I felt that my time there was not wasted. I wish that school can be all lecture-based, without assignment, quizzes, tests and most importantly, without exams! They are just too stressful! Everyone should earn just because they want to gain knowledge! All the forms of assessments should be abolished because they add stress to studying and make them boring, dry and hopelessly suicidal!
The first lecture that we have is a recap of Ms Huang's cancer lecture! We learn about the drugs used to cure it versus its side effects and different ways to cure cancer via surgery, or medicine and the pro and cons of them. And we need to factor in the side effects of the drugs together with the ailments that one is currently suffering from and how chemotherapy works. Lump that is small enough to be detected is actually 1 million worth of cells! And later on, they will start to use chemotherapy to destroy the cancer cells! It is what we have learnt this semester.
Next lecture was very interesting. It is about braids. Different ways of tying braids with the same end result (braids) can be derived using algebra and coordinates. It is like wow wow wow. He derived it and prove the two ways to be the same.
Later, the lecture was about genome. Probability. :D the lecturer kept claiming that he is a cool geek and whenever he is bored, he will do mathematical stuffs. He had a programme that can stimulate the playing of monopoly and he ran the programme until 1 million games of monopoly is played! Later, he collected the data and told us some how we can win monopoly via probability and the game in casinos with the highest chances of us (players) winning is black jack. We also learnt that different races have different chances of getting this disease. Knowing your gene can actually predict if you will get the disease when you are in your 50s with a 5% accuracy. When you know what type of disease you are more incline to get, you can actually prevent it by keeping your body in shape and more. Actually, humans are 99.9% similar to each other genetically. Can you imagine? The 0.1% of your 3 billion cells can make a world of a difference to your appearances, height and more!
Next, we had lunch, followed by this lecture whereby the lecturer convinced us how come having a hobby is good for us all! Do you know that micro-organisms are discovered by a businessman because of his interest? He decided that one day what if he can see things beyond the naked eyes. So, he developed lens and thus, he managed to discover micro-organisms! Later, this group of guys had this weird hobby to develop micro-organism! He sliced off a layer of the potato peel and spread anything he can find on it. Later, bacteria will grow and he will observe the color and colony formed. So, there is this weird disease that plagued a cow and he decided to take the blood of an infected animal and spread the blood of the cow on the slice of potato peel! He observed that unlike all other samples he had collected, there is only 1 type of colony formed. So, he injected the blood of the infected cow into the bloodstream of another healthy cow. Sure enough, the cow was infected with this disease. He repeated this for more than 20 times. Poor cows! This is when everyone takes micro-biology serious. In the past, people are infected with infections and die from them. They wore costumes that made themselves resemble chicken, so the virus will be mistaken and will not infect them! Interesting! And it is because of this infection that after a year, 75% of the population in UK died and everyone became very rich, because all the deceased had passed on all their wealth to their relatives. So, peasants became very valuable , as peasants are needed to manage the land and this is how democracy started. Employers must not only give the peasants a say in their decision, but also treat them kindly, if not, they will run away! WOW! The only good thing of this plague is that we got democracy! :D Hooray!
Next, we had this lecture about satellites. How satellites can capture images of Singapore within 5 days of orbiting and that Singapore is getting greener.
And last of all, we had this lecture about crimes and forensic science- the different techniques to crack crimes and dna profiling. How we use dna to trace back who did the disease. We heard of a lot of stories from there.
So fun! Wish that everyday in school, we can have lectures all day without homework, quizzes, tests and exams! I am feeling so sleepy. Probably I will end up sleeping early. Bye bye!
